What Happens During RBT Renewal Competency Assessment

July 16

If you’re a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), you already know how important your role is in supporting individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

But staying certified means more than just showing up every day—it requires annual renewal. This includes successfully completing the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment.

Whether this is your first time renewing or you’re guiding a colleague through the process, here’s what you need to know.

Why RBT Renewal Matters

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®) requires all RBTs to renew their certification every year. This ensures that RBTs maintain the core skills and ethical standards needed to deliver high-quality applied behavior analysis (ABA) services.

The Renewal Competency Assessment is a key part of that process. It confirms that you still meet the performance expectations outlined in the RBT Task List (2nd Edition) and RBT Ethics Code (2.0).

What Is the RBT Renewal Competency Assessment?

The Renewal Competency Assessment is a structured evaluation that covers essential RBT tasks. It’s similar to the initial competency assessment you completed before becoming certified, but it focuses on continued competence rather than initial readiness.

The assessment must be completed one-on-one with a qualified BACB certificant such as a BCBA, BCaBA, or Florida-Certified Behavior Analyst (FL-CBA). You’ll need to complete and pass this assessment before submitting your renewal application to the BACB.

What’s Covered in the Assessment?

The assessment includes skills from six key areas of the RBT Task List:

1. Measurement

  • Collecting data accurately (e.g., frequency, duration)
  • Recording permanent product outcomes

2. Assessment

  • Assisting with preference assessments
  • Supporting functional behavior assessments

3. Skill Acquisition

  • Implementing skill acquisition plans
  • Using strategies like Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

4. Behavior Reduction

  • Carrying out behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Responding appropriately to challenging behaviors

5. Documentation and Reporting

  • Writing session notes
  • Reporting relevant information to supervisors

6. Professional Conduct

  • Maintaining client dignity and confidentiality
  • Following the RBT Ethics Code
  • Communicating professionally with your supervising BCBA

How the Assessment Is Conducted

Your assessor will choose a combination of the following formats:

  • Role-play: Simulated scenarios to demonstrate skill use
  • Interview: You explain how you would implement procedures
  • Direct observation: Performing tasks while working with a client

The assessment can be completed in person or via telehealth, depending on your setting and supervisor availability. No matter the format, the focus is on real-world, applicable skills.

Tips for a Successful Renewal Assessment

Here are a few helpful strategies to prepare:

  • Review the RBT Task List (2nd Edition) – Know the expectations clearly.
  • Ask for feedback from your supervisor before the assessment.
  • Practice documentation—accurate notes and data are essential.
  • Stay calm and professional. This is a chance to show the skills you already use every day!

What Happens After the Assessment?

Once you pass the assessment, your assessor will sign the official RBT Renewal Competency Assessment form. You’ll include this in your renewal application to the BACB, along with:

  • Your completed renewal application
  • Payment of the renewal fee
  • Updated background check (if required)

If you don’t pass the first time, don’t worry—your assessor can provide feedback and schedule another time to reassess before your certification expires.
